Stable Isotope Values Suggest Opossums (Didelphis virginiana) at the Northern Edge of their Range do not Seasonally Molt

چکیده

Didelphis virginiana (Virginia Opossum) continues to spread further north into temperate North America, raising questions regarding how they survive harsh winters. Very few marsupials exhibit winter adaptations such as torpor or seasonal molting. We used stable isotopes evaluate evidence of molting in Opossums. serially cut hairs from captive Opossums determine if a documented diet shift early life was reflected along the hair shaft. Isotope values mirrored Opossum's diets. compared isotope between trapped different seasons and found no differences. The data indicate do not seasonally molt at northern edge their range.

Landscape Associations of Road-killed Virginia Opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in Central Massachusetts

—Knowing the distribution of species at the landscape level can give insight into the proximate mechanisms determining the species’ range on a regional scale. We used a survey of road-killed animals to investigate landscape features associated with the presence of Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in central Massachusetts. Volunteers noted roadkilled opossums on their daily commutes thro...

First molecular evidence of Toxoplasma gondii in opossums (Didelphis virginiana) from Yucatan, Mexico

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite recognized as a causal agent of toxoplasmosis; zoonotic disease endemic in many countries worldwide, including Mexico. Different species of animals participate in the wild cycle infection, including opossums of the species Didelphis virginiana. Thirteen D. virginiana were captured in Yucatan, Mexico. Detection of T. gondii was achieved by ...

Prevalence of sarcocystis species sporocysts in wild-caught opossums (Didelphis virginiana).

Sarcocystis sporocysts were found in intestinal scrapings from 24 (54.5%) of 44 opossums (Didelphis virginiana). The number of sporocysts varied from a few (< 10,000) to 245 million. Sporocysts from 23 of 24 opossums were fed to captive budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatas), and the inocula from 21 opossums were infective, indicating the presence of Sarcocystis falcatula. Sporocysts from 24 opo...

Mammary glands in male marsupials: I. Primordia in neonatal opossums Didelphis virginiana and Monodelphis domestica.

Neonates of the American didelphid marsupials Didelphis virginiana and Monodelphis domestica were sexed by karyotype and histologically examined on the day of birth. Mammary anlagen were found in both sexes of both species, but the neonatal males had less than one-third of the full female complement of mammary glands. Male neonates of both species also had paired scrotal bulges anterior to the ...

Adult opossums (Didelphis virginiana) demonstrate near normal locomotion after spinal cord transection as neonates.

When the thoracic spinal cord of the North American opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is transected on postnatal day (PD) 5, the site of injury becomes bridged by histologically recognizable spinal cord and axons which form major long tracts grow through the lesion. In the present study we asked whether opossums lesioned on PD5 have normal use of the hindlimbs as adults and, if so, whether that us...
